Meet Dr Niveshni Maistry

Dr Niveshni Maistry graduated as a medical doctor from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2012.
Her early years of training included an internship at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and community service at Klerksdorp Hospital. It was during this time, while working in general surgery and trauma, that she developed a strong interest in caring for children requiring surgical support.
Her path led her to the United Kingdom, where she worked as a paediatric surgery trainee at Oxford Children’s Hospital for two years. This experience grew her skills and broadened her understanding of complex surgical conditions in children. Returning to South Africa in 2018, she continued her training through the University of the Witwatersrand and completed her paediatric surgery specialisation.
Beyond her clinical work, Dr Maistry has made significant contributions to research and global health. She completed the University of Oxford’s Global Surgery master’s short course in 2018 and went on to establish the South African Global Surgery Society, which she led from 2018 to 2021. She has also presented at national and international conferences, sharing her research and insights with colleagues worldwide. She has a multitude of local and international peer-reviewed publications
Her work has been recognised with multiple awards, including:
- Second place in the Bert Myburgh Surgical Research Forum
- Surgeons for Little Lives Emerging Researcher of the Year Award
Dr Maistry chose paediatric surgery because of her love for working with children and her dedication to improving their quality of life. Away from the hospital, she enjoys practising yoga and spending time with her dogs, both of which bring balance to her busy professional life.
For Dr Maistry, paediatric surgery is not just about performing procedures but about walking alongside families during some of the most challenging moments in their lives, offering reassurance and care that is tailored to the unique needs of each little one.
